The CDCP is a government program that helps reduce the financial barriers to routine and essential dental care.
To qualify, you must:
- Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
- Have filed an income tax return for the previous year
- Have a household income under $90,000
- Not have private dental insurance through work, pension, or school
The program began with children, seniors, and people with disabilities, but now most eligible adults can apply as well.
The CDCP helps cover a wide range of important dental services, such as:
- Routine exams, cleanings, and fluoride treatments
- X-rays and other diagnostic services
- Fillings, extractions, and basic restorative care
- Emergency care for infections or pain
- Certain specialty services (with pre-approval)
The CDCP doesn’t cover every dental service, but it does offer generous support for essential care. For instance, while cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening or dental veneers aren’t included, the plan helps cover routine checkups, cleanings, fillings, and other important treatments. This makes it easier to stay on top of your oral health, catch issues early, and avoid more serious (and expensive) problems in the future — all while keeping your budget in check.
Your coverage through the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) depends on your household income:

Income under $70,000 → CDCP covers 100% (based on CDCP fee rates)

$70,000–$79,999 → CDCP covers 60%, you pay 40%

$80,000–$89,999 → CDCP covers 40%, you pay 60%
These amounts apply to services included under the CDCP. If you’re not sure what is or isn’t covered, we’ll be happy to walk you through it.
Most dental offices in Ontario, including ours, follow the Ontario Dental Association (ODA) Fee Guide, which outlines the standard prices for dental services across the province.
The CDCP, however, uses its own fee guide that may list lower prices. If the cost of a treatment under the ODA fee guide is higher than what CDCP pays, you may be responsible for the difference. This is known as a balance.
👉 For Example: If a dental cleaning is listed at $120 under the ODA fee guide, and CDCP covers $100 for that procedure, and you qualify for 100% CDCP coverage, you would simply pay the remaining $20.
